So I'm thinking of switching my OS from Windows Vista to Linux Ubuntu.

Good idea? Bad idea? Discuss.

wow. this must be a troll.

anything is better than Vista. but just give win7 a go before you take the open source plunge. but ubuntu is a very impressive linux.

Muti-boot

If you have a 1TB partition it up. 1TB is to big anyway.
I like to make 4 partitions. Put windows on the 1st partition then Linux on the second partition. Grub will handle the boot loading. Just be careful with the partition manager.

The best time to do this is during a Windows clean install because you want to partition it before installing.

If you have both OSes on the same machine its easy to compare. I would say that Linux is much faster and now I dont use Windows that much.

Really I have 3 OS

XP 32 bit
Ubuntu 32 bit
Ubuntu 64 bit

Oh dont pay for the fancy Win 7 boxed version License and destructions.
The only thing I can find around is the upgrade versions in a $300 box.
You can get a pain wrapper System Builder License sometimes for about $100. Maybe a little more for Win 7 at newegg.

I give you Gparted a live Linux CD. My fav tool

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/

This seem to work better than any partition software that you can buy. No messin around. All you need is a iso CD burner.

Ubuntu dual boot with Vista is retard proof.
It will give you the option when your installing.
I switch from Windows7 to Ubuntu a while back. Now I never touch windows.

i prefer linux.. its faster.. more reliable & does pretty much everything u need it2.. windows is ok but honestly for a OS that u have 2pay for.. it needs 2b alot better.. everytime they come out with a new os it seems 2get worse.. windows 7 is better than vista (microshit themselves said it was a broken os) but xp 2me is far superior in several ways.. (aside from the eyecandy) but 2me i believe windows 98se was alot more sturdy of a system.. mac os blows.. so yeah.. take it as u will my opinion is linux (especially ubuntu) is the better of the 3

Apples OS is unix based just like Linux.
And manufacturers support it. If you do
not mind going on to blogs and waiting
for nasty, barely human geeks to help
you find an answer to a bug, or lack of
driver. It will be fine for you. It's a steep
learning curve, might be worth it when
you get there. But if you don't live in your
parents basement and have something
to do other than masturbate and look for
answers for computer problems, Linux
might be for you. I've tried it a couple of
times. I need too many pariferals to even
think about it. Writing my own driver for
every fucking device.....

It's about the same old crap. It's a
choice of what periferals and software
will be supported at what price point.

That's a fight between a three legged OS and a "GIMP". Neither one is supported by hardware, or software manufacturers. Name your poison. Bad, or worse. Kind of sucks and sucks just a little bit harder.

first of all penguinfags scream about linux being free - Windows is, for people technically minded enough to use linux - effectively free. It is for me. Windows 7 is the best OS around for general use. Better than OSX. Better than Ubuntu. Largest application base, best hardware support.

But Vista was plain embarrassing. Step 1: Install Win7. Step 2: Install Ubuntu.

Seriously? Vista?

Obvious troll.

Get Linux, and XP/7.
